Who is Robert Tomlinson?

Robert Tomlinson is a 23-year-old senior journalism major at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He currently lives with his parents in Three Rivers, Michigan, and commutes to Kalamazoo daily for class. His career goal is to become either a sportswriter or a sports broadcaster, and is majoring in journalism to achieve his goals.

He first became interested in broadcasting and sports back in third grade. His mom sat him down (more like forced him) to watch a Detroit Lions football game one Sunday afternoon. He was interested in what the announcers had to say, so he tried to play the part all through childhood.

In high school, Robert was the voice of the Wildcat News radio program on FM 95.9 WLKM in Three Rivers. The show was a repeat of the high school announcements from that morning, broadcast to a wider audience via the station. The program drew critical acclaim from the Three Rivers community. His tenure lasted for three years, until the loss of the broadcasting program at Three Rivers High School forced the show to end in 2013. During the last year of the program, he wrote the entire script from scratch, taking time out of his lunch period to do so. You can view an archive of the Wildcat News episodes on Facebook.

He has also gained experience outside of the classroom in broadcasting. He was an intern at Mid-West Family Broadcasting in Benton Harbor, Michigan, in the summer of 2018, helping out in the news and sports department and being a co-host on Morning Sports Beat, the morning sports program on 95.7 WSJM Sports. Robert also participated in the Sports Broadcasting Camp from 2008-2012 in Chicago, practicing doing stand-ups, mock SportsCenter programs, and more.

Currently, Robert writes for the Western Herald, WMU’s student-run newspaper, as a sports reporter. He has covered multiple events, including College GameDay, multiple WMU volleyball tournament runs, and has done multiple profiles on WMU student-athletes. You can view a collection of his Herald content here. In addition to working at the Herald, Robert has also produced videos for WMU’s Young Broadcasters of Tomorrow organization. His work there includes hosting, writing, and editing the WMU Student News and a mock panel discussing fake news.
